Darryl Peters' Big John Mazmanian's Willys
|
Found below is a detailed description that Darryl has supplied, on
what he did to his Willys Gasser.
Kit: Revell Kit #85-2350, 1/25th scale.
Paint:
The body was primed with Dynatron Gray Primer out of a spray can. Four coats of primer were
applied and sanded with 2000-grit wet and dry sandpaper between coats. The body was painted with
four coats of House of Kolors Clear Gloss. All topcoats were cut with Mar-Hyde Acrylic Lacquer
thinner and airbrushed with an Aztec airbrush at 25 psi. Four clear coats were applied and each
coat was wet sanded with a 6000- grit polishing cloth. The final clear coat was polished with
6000 to 12000- grit polishing clothes and rubbed out with Meguire’s Scratch X and waxed with
Turtle Wax Clear Coat. The decals are a combination of kit decals and those from the Model King.
The black window seals were hand painted with Polly S Acrylic Night Black enamel. The passenger
side window was painted with Testors Candy Red enamel.
Interior:
The interior tub, seat and roll bar were painted with Dynaton Gray Lacquer Primer and clear
coated with Testors semigloss clear. The floor was painted with Poly S Acrylic Flat Gray and flocked
with Detail Master gray flocking. The steering wheel was painted with Alclad II Chrome and Testors
Black Chrome Trim (semigloss black). The roll bar padding was painted with Testors Black Chrome Trim.
Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland resin interior door and window handles were painted with
Alclad II Chrome and installed in the door panels. A Detail Master old style Sun tachometer was mounted
on the steering column and wired. The dash gauge panel openings were blocked off with styrene plastic
disks, painted with Testors Aluminum Metalizer, and Model Car Garage gauges were added. Ribbon was used
for the seat belt with hardware from Merikts photoetched set. The interior tub underside and rear wheel
tubs were painted the same color as the body. A parachute pull ring was made from fine wire and routed
into the interior aside of the driver’s seat.
Body:
The only bodywork performed consisted of removing the hood clips and filling the front fenders.
The front hood clips are from a Model Car Garage 1932 Ford photoetch detail set. The rear hood pins
are from a Modeler's photoetch set. The chrome side trim is 1/64th inch wide chrome mylar tape.
Frame:
The frame was painted with Dynatron Gray Primer and clear coated with House of Kolors Clear Gloss.
The kit's front axle, tie rod, the Scale Auto Details cast resin front wheel backs, and the ladder bars
were painted with Alclad II Chrome. The kit's rear bumper chrome was stripped off with Liquid Plumber
and painted with Alclad II Chrome. Scale Auto Details resin steering box, resin oil with Fram decals,
and resin brake master cylinder were added. An MAS Moon fuel tank replaced the kit item. The kit's rear
wheels and tires were used. The rear wheel backs were painted with Alclad II Chrome. The Crager front rims
came from the parts box and used kits tires. Valve stems made from fine black wire were added to all four
wheels. The steering gear (column and pitman arm) was scratch built from plastic card and rod. The steering
column was lined to each brake disk caliper. A fuel line was run from the Moon tank to a scratch built
electric fuel pump and then to the engine. A 000-120 nut and bolt top was added for each front shock.
The drive shaft safety loop was scratch built from Evergreen plastic strip and aluminum tube and painted
like the frame. The parachute line guides and anchor were scratch built from Evergreen plastic strip and
tube and painted with Testors Steel Metalizer.
Engine:
The engine was airbrushed the same color as the body with House of Kolor lacquer. Testors Metalizer
copper was used for freeze plugs on the block. The valve covers, headers, blower and oil pan were stripped
with Liquid Plumber and painted with Alclad II Chrome. The transmission and bell housing were pained with
Testors Metalizer steel. Turned aluminum engine and blower pulleys were added. The idler pulley bracket was
scratch built from Evergreen styrene strip and rod. Bolt heads were made from Plastruct hexagonal rod and
painted with Testors Steel Metalizer. A Scale Auto Details resin water pump pulley was added and painted
with Testors Aluminum Metalizer. Chartpak 1/64th inch black tape was used for a water pump belt.
The blower belt is from MAS and Scale Auto Details part number decals were applied. Stainless steel tubing was
used for the transmission and engine dipstick tubes. For the ignition, a Scale Repo Plus Distributor and Scale Auto
Details resin coil were used, with spark plug wires made from fine wire with insulation boots installed in the
correct firing order. The photoetch spark plug wire looms were from S & S Specialties. Old Style photoetch
hose clamps were from Model Car Garage. The throttle linkage was made from fine wire. The throttle return spring
was made from fine wire wound around a #70 drill bit. Model Car Garage and S & S Specialties throttle linkage
arms were used on the injectors.
